Check out the Jolla-Devices STORE.
Our beta shop. It's a sort of archive where to buy Sailfish OS-ready devices.
In this October 2023, while I was writing a news to publish this month, another crisis worries the whole world: namely the crisis in the Middle East that began with the terrorist attacks by Hamas on 7 October, followed by the starting of the Israel’s reaction.
As it happened with the war in Ukraine, this element of uncertainty initially tends to paralyze the purchasing decisions by the users.
Hoping that the crisis will solve in the coming weeks, the J-D Store will continue to roll out the planned updates.
From the very first iterations the “Jolla-Devices STORE” was focused on Sailfish OS and Meego phones, and over the years an interest in all alternative mobile OSes emerged in this niche of the market.
Moving in this direction, several experiments had been attempted to introduce Pixel phones with Graphene OS into the Store, but with very little results.
Subsequently, the partnership with Hallo Welt allowed the addition to the J-D Store of phones with the Volla OS and Ubuntu Touch operating system; in certain cases the J-D Store can offer slight discounts compared to the Volla.online store.
Now, continuing in the direction of consolidating the Store and making it richer in alternatives, there’s a line of phones that had been overlooked so far and will be offered soon.
As all Sailfish OS enthusiasts know, Sony has a developer program called “Open Devices Program” that serves as a support to the community of independent developers who want to install alternative ROMs and contribute to AOSP more easily.
The phones of the Xperia 10 family line have been the ones chosen by Jolla for years to port an official Sailfish OS version, but other Xperia product lines are also part of the Open Devices Program.
In detail, the Xperia 1, Xperia 1 II (mk2), and Xperia 5 II are particularly suitable for their quality-price ratio and decent support from alternative ROMs, and they will be added to the Store, by the month of November.
NOKIA N8
Another area related to Sailfish OS are Nokia phones, in the sense of Nokia-the OG company: in addition to the 4 colors of the Nokia N9 phone, the Nokia N8 will also be added, starting with the cyan version.
While I am personally not a fan of Maemo (I was for the #teammeego), this smartphone was important for its good camera and for being the last flagship with Maemo.
The Nokia N8 is the predecessor of the N9. It features a 12 MP, 1/1.83″ camera which was very good at its time so that Nokia said “The best ever smartphone camera!”
NOKIA N900
Another phone that will complete the “Nokia Vintage” (formerly Meego) Section is the Nokia N900: it’s the historic mini-tablet with a physical sliding QWERTY keyboard. Introduced in 2009, it uses Maemo 5 and “stands out for the presence of advanced Multi-Tasking management. From field tests it managed to run more than 30 open applications at the same time”. It felt like a linux mini-PC at the times.
Waiting to see what the future holds for us, happy browsing!
